Do oral surgeons have to attend med school after dental school?

I’m extremely confused… I read on-line that only hospital-based training is required (residency) for a dentist to complete a specialty in oral surgery, but many oral/maxi programs state that the dentist will have received a MD, as well as, a certification at the time of graduation. Can someone just clarify this for me? It would be greatly appreciated.
