How do you know if your child or school is learning at the right skills level?

There is always talk on television that kids are always behind in school. My daughter is a straight A student, but she still needs to sit in class with students that may be holding her behind. How do I know if her school is holding her behind or the school itself is behind other schools in the area or in the nation? I know parents who have children taking taking geometry and calculus classes in private schools at the sixth grade level when most kids in public schools don’t start until high school.
